In yet another shameful incident, a 20-year-old pregnant woman was stripped, assaulted and paraded naked in Wardhannapet on Monday.
According to a report in the Deccan Chronicle, the attack was carried out by the relatives of the victim’s husband’s first wife. They allegedly injured her private parts with a burning piece of wood, stripped her and then paraded her naked on the streets. They apparently blamed the victim, Anitha, for the husband’s negligence towards his first wife.
The police and bystanders later came to the rescue of Anitha and admitted her to a local hospital. The police have also registered cases against nine people, including Anitha's husband Banoth Ravi and his first wife Swaroopa.
Anitha and Ravi, a farmer, had a secret wedding in Tirupati in March 2015. Ravi was still married to Swaroopa, his wife of five years and the mother of his two children, Wardhannapet CI Santhosh told the Deccan Chronicle.
When Swaroopa came to know about her husband's second marriage, they started having regular fights, after which Ravi moved in permanently with Anitha.
Reports say Ravi mistreated Swaroopa and her parents after his second marriage.
Swaroopa finally took the matter to the Panchayat where Ravi promised her a divorce and a compensation of ₹7.5 lakh for his children.
In a Panchayat meeting on Monday, a fight broke out between Ravi, his first wife and Anitha following which Swaroopa's relatives perpetrated the attack.
Ravi and Swaroopa are in police custody along with three other accused.
Last week, a Tanzanian woman was stripped and paraded naked on the streets of Bengaluru in a case of mistaken identity.
