An Indian female aid worker has been abducted by unknown gunmen from Kabul city, security officials said.

The incident took place late Thursday night in the vicinity of Qala-e-Fatullah area of the city where numerous kidnapping incidents have taken place in the past, reports Khaama Press.

According to a preliminary report, the 40-year-old woman was working with a non-governmental organisation and was kidnapped on her way to Taimani.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the incident.

Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj has tweeted:

The incident comes as the Embassy of India in Kabul had issued a security alert last month to Indian citizens residing in Afghanistan and travelling to the country on the persistent volatile situation in the country.

"All Indians residing in Afghanistan and Indian travellers to Afghanistan are advised that the security situation in Afghanistan remains highly volatile. Terrorist attacks have taken place in many parts of the country against a variety of targets including foreigners and are expected to continue. There is also the risk of kidnapping and hostage taking throughout the Afghanistan," the statement had said.

The US Embassy in Kabul had also issued two separate alerts, warning regarding a possible suicide and coordinated attack or kidnapping attempt of foreigners in capital Kabul.
